This edited volume, tentatively titled “Preparing teachers to teach English as an International Language (EIL)” and scheduled be published by Multilingual Matters in Spring 2016, explores innovative and practical ways to prepare teachers of EIL. EIL here does not suggest one specific variety of international English; rather, the term EIL describes a function that English performs in international, multilingual contexts, to which each speaker brings a variety of English that he or she is most familiar with and employs various strategies to communicate effectively.

The primary goal of this volume is to showcases existing teacher education program models, courses, units in a course, and pedagogical ideas that are informed by theories and research in English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), World Englishes (WE), and other relevant areas. The descriptions of pedagogical practices from diverse geographical, cultural, and institutional contexts collectively illustrate a range of possible approaches to preparing teachers who can meet the diverse needs of English learners in international contexts today.
